Lake Tahoe isn’t just another body of water. Crystal-clear visibility, abrasive granite sand, and the notorious Washoe Zephyr create unique challenges that demand specialized mooring expertise. With over 17 years of experience and 1,000+ successful installations, DiveRobotix provides the most comprehensive mooring services on Lake Tahoe.
⚠️ Most Tahoe Boats Sink from Preventable Mooring Failures
Did you know? More boats sink at Lake Tahoe from mooring system failures and cover collapse than from hull leaks. The combination of sudden wind events, abrasive granite sand, and inadequate maintenance creates a perfect storm for catastrophic failure.
The cost of prevention is always less than the cost of salvage. A professional mooring inspection costs a fraction of what you’ll pay in repairs, insurance deductibles, and lost season time if your boat breaks free or sinks.

Why Lake Tahoe Moorings Are Different
🌊 The Washoe Zephyr
This notorious wind phenomenon can turn a calm bay into a battleground in minutes, with gusts reaching 40+ mph. Unlike predictable coastal winds, the Zephyr is unpredictable and fierce, placing enormous lateral strain on mooring systems.
Your mooring must be engineered to handle these extreme, sudden events.
🪨 Abrasive Granite Sand
Lake Tahoe’s bottom acts like industrial sandpaper. Unlike forgiving silt or mud found in other lakes, Tahoe’s granite composition wears down chain links, shackles, and hardware at an accelerated rate.
Regular inspection and timely replacement are essential to avoid unseen degradation.
💎 Crystal-Clear Water
Tahoe’s legendary transparency means every frayed line, rusty shackle, or worn chain is visible to everyone. A clean, well-maintained mooring looks professional; neglect is impossible to hide.
Your mooring is a visible statement about how you care for your investment.
Serving All of Lake Tahoe

“In Lake Tahoe, there’s no such thing as ‘just good enough’—your mooring has to be the best, or your boat simply isn’t safe. Scott and DiveRobotix provided exactly that level of expertise and peace of mind.”

Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend a minimum of two inspections per season: a pre-season baseline inspection (April-May) and a mid-season check (July-August). After any major wind event (Washoe Zephyr over 30 mph), you should schedule a post-storm assessment. High-value boats or moorings in exposed locations should consider quarterly inspections.
Our 4K ROV inspections provide crystal-clear video documentation that you can review yourself. Unlike traditional diver inspections where you rely on verbal reports, you get permanent video proof of every component’s condition. ROV inspections are also faster, less expensive, and can safely access deeper moorings without dive time limitations.
With proper maintenance, a high-quality mooring block can last 20+ years. However, chains, shackles, and pennants need more frequent replacement. We typically see bottom chain requiring replacement every 3-5 years due to abrasion, shackles every 5-7 years, and pennants annually. Regular inspections identify components before they fail.
Surprisingly, it’s not the mooring block itself. The most common failures occur at: 1) Worn bottom chain in the abrasive zone (first 10-15 feet), 2) Corroded shackles at chain transitions, 3) Seized swivels that cause chain twist, and 4) Frayed or chafed pennants. All of these are 100% preventable with regular inspection and timely replacement.
During peak season (June-September), we recommend booking 1-2 weeks in advance. However, we maintain emergency availability for post-storm assessments and urgent situations. Call (775) 230-1116 and we’ll work to accommodate your schedule.
While moorings are our specialty, DiveRobotix provides comprehensive underwater services including hull cleaning, prop inspections, underwater salvage and recovery, dropped item retrieval, and general ROV survey work. If it’s underwater at Lake Tahoe, we can help.
